I'm travelling to Phoenix with my family at the end of April I was wondering whats the best way to plan a day trip to the Grand Canyon. It's really too far from Phoenix to do as a single day It's a perfectly good hotel, but very isolated.
An early morning start allowed me to get into the park and see the views before most How far away is grand canyon from phoenix the crowds arrived. An alternative for budget accomodation would be Williams - one of the few remaining segments of the old Route 66, which is about 40 miles from the park entrance. There is also a train service running from Williams if that floats your boat.
Drive yourself and tour it yourself. No guide is needed. You'll get all the guide info you need when you enter the park, or you can access it now at the park website. Allow about hours for the drive depending on where you start from in PHX. Best hotels are inside the park Xanterra if you can find one. Next best place is just outside the park in Tusayanbut with just one overnight, take whatever you can get inside the park.
The convenience is well worth it. It's about a 40 minute drive to the park from there, and there are several moderately-priced chains such as Days Inn, etc.
It's a pretty town surrounded by forest and there are several good restaurants there. The poster who stayed at the Cameron Trading Post Inn had a good idea, too. That's the east entrance to the park, so it's less congested. Be aware there is nothing to do in Cameron except see "How far away is grand canyon from phoenix" Trading Post there is a good restaurant there and get a feel for the Navajo Reservation. It's a one-night stopover at best.
Cameron is about an hour north of Flagstaff on Hwy Most traffic to the canyon takes Hwy out of Flagstaff or Hwy 64 out of Williams. Your best bet for cheapest hotel rates would be Flagstaff, which is about 90 minutes from the park. Every conceivable national chain has a property or two in Flagstaff.
There are also local operators, but they can be dicey. Try to get a room inside the park. There are rooms available for many nights in April within your price range.
Bright Angel is right on the rim, though, and preferable. Maybe the exchange rate, wheich is ever more benefecial to you, will help. You can see the availablity and book at www. If you want to see and enjoy the canyon, it is really best to stay inside the park. You can walk out your door and you are there.
I agree with the above posts, try to stay inside the park if you can. If not, then Tusayan. Williams is a solid 1 hour drive from GCNP south rim. With the exception of the one time I hiked the canyon and stayed at Phantom Ranch, I've always taken day trips from Phx -- leave early in the am, spend the day and drive back at "How far away is grand canyon from phoenix." You don't need to book a guide -- the park rangers are glad to provide you any information you need.
However, for the best experience, I'd recommend spending the night
How far away is grand canyon from phoenix the canyon to get the sunset and sunrise views. Leave Phx early, maybe stop at Sedona or Montezuma's Castle and arrive at the canyon in the early afternoon.
Book a room at the canyon El Tovar would be my choice! Tusayan is the next closest, but you're outside of the park and you don't have views of the canyon. This topic has been closed to new How far away is grand canyon from phoenix due to inactivity.
